Abstract
Background: Breast cancer is an important global public health problem, especially in the elderly, due to its high incidence and mortality. Nurses should educate patients to reduce complications, improve psychological status, and promote self-care practices post-mastectomy. The aim is to assess Effectiveness of discharge education plan for patients’ Care Practices and Anxiety Levels Post Mastectomy.
Methods: A quasi-experimental research design was used in this study at the Oncology Center in X Governorate, X. The study's subjects comprised eighty geriatric female patients with breast cancer undergoing modified radical mastectomy. They were divided randomly into two groups: a study group (40) and a control group (40). Three tools were used: first, Socio-Demographic and Clinical Data of Geriatric Cancer Patients Undergoing Modified Radical Mastectomy Structured Interview Schedule. Second, Self-Care Practices of Post-Operative Modified Radical Mastectomy Geriatric Patients Structured Interview Schedule, and Third, Visual Analog Scale for Anxiety.
Results: Before implementing the plan, there were no significant differences between the study and control groups in self-care practices and anxiety levels. The data analysis after implementation showed significant improvement in self-care practice and anxiety levels in the study group as compared with the control group.
Conclusion: The discharge education plan was effective in increasing geriatric women’s awareness about self-care practices and decreasing their anxiety level post-mastectomy.
